Built-in dishwasher repair
Fill, wash, drain, dry. Four stages, and a dishwasher fault almost always belongs to exactly one of them once you have watched a cycle start.

A dishwasher does four things in sequence: fill, wash, drain, dry. Almost every complaint belongs cleanly to one of those stages, and identifying which one takes watching a single cycle for about ninety seconds. That is why we ask you to leave the machine loaded and dirty rather than running it clean before we arrive.
It will not drain
Standing water at the end of a cycle is the most common call in this category and the one most often solved without a part.
Start outside the machine. A dishwasher drains through a hose that ties into the sink plumbing, and if it ties into a garbage disposer, that disposer has a knockout plug moulded into its dishwasher inlet when it is built. If the plug was never punched out at installation, the machine cannot drain at all — and the fault appears the day the appliance is first used, or the day a new disposer is fitted under an existing dishwasher. Every technician has found this one; it costs nothing to check and it is genuinely common after a kitchen refresh.
Inside the machine, the filter assembly and the sump come next. Then the drain pump itself, which either runs or does not, and can be heard doing so. A pump that hums without moving water usually has something wound around the impeller.
Water on the floor
Leaks are worth locating precisely before anything is dismantled, because the door seal, the sump gasket, the fill valve and the hose connections all end up as water at the same spot on the tile. Run the machine with the kickplate off and watch. A leak that only appears during fill is upstream; a leak that only appears during the wash phase is the door or the sump; a leak that appears at drain is the hose or its clamps.
Doors, springs and cables
A door that falls open instead of staying where you put it is a spring or cable fault, and on a built-in unit those cables run over pulleys down each side of the tub. They fray and eventually part, usually one before the other, which is why a door often starts by dropping crookedly.
This is worth attending to rather than living with. A door that drops is putting its full weight, plus whatever is in the open rack, onto the hinges at the bottom of every travel. Left long enough it takes the hinges with it, and the seal after that.
Poor wash results
If the upper rack comes out dirtier than the lower, the fault is almost always water not arriving up there: the mid-level spray arm, its feed tube, or the coupling where the tube meets the tub wall. Spin every spray arm by hand and hold each one up to the light — blocked jets are visible, and a single blocked run of holes maps exactly onto the patch of dishes that stays dirty.
If everything is uniformly poor, look at wash temperature and at the wash pump. Water that arrives cold because the run from the water heater is long and the machine was started on a cold line will underperform every time, regardless of what it is asked to do.
Cloudy glassware
Cloudy glasses are worth separating out, because two completely different things produce the same complaint and only one of them is recoverable.
There is a test that settles it in a minute, and it costs nothing. Take a glass that has gone cloudy and wipe it with a little white vinegar on a cloth. If the haze lifts, it is a deposit sitting on the surface, the glass is fine, and the lever is dosing, rinse aid and wash temperature — all of which are adjustable. If the haze does not lift, the surface of the glass itself has been etched. That is permanent, no cycle will reverse it, and no part on the machine will either.
Where the haze does wipe off, work through the adjustable causes in order. Detergent goes in to the fill line on the dispenser rather than to the top of the cup; more is not better and the excess simply does not rinse away. Rinse aid does more of the drying and the sheeting work than most people expect, and an empty reservoir shows up first on glass. Then look at wash temperature: a machine started on a cold line at the far end of a long run from the water heater will underperform every cycle regardless of what is in the dispenser.
If the glasses are clouded and the dishes are also coming out poorly, stop treating it as a glassware problem — that is a wash problem, and it belongs to the spray arms, the filter or the pump above.
Dry cycle
Dishes wet at the end of a dry cycle are usually a heat or venting problem rather than a fan problem, and plastic items will always come out wetter than china regardless. Check the rinse aid dispenser before anything else — sheeting action does more of the drying work than most people expect.

It would fill and then just sit there humming. The drain pump had a shard of glass wedged into the impeller. He got it out, ran three cycles to be sure, and warned me the pump may not last long after that abuse.
