Viking kitchen appliances · repair against replacement

When the repair is worth it, and when it is not

Every band in the book set against half of what the same appliance costs new. The sum is on this page; the survey only decides which row you are standing on.

Wide crop at the foot of the built-in column: a kneeling technician lifting the base grille clear of the machine compartment, the cabinet plinth and wood floor beside him.
The dearest thing in the book lives behind this grille, and it is also the one repair large enough to make replacing the cabinet a real question.

Nearly everyone arrives with the same rule: if the repair costs more than half of a replacement, replace it instead. It is a good rule. It was also written for appliances that cost a few hundred dollars, where half of a replacement is small enough for an ordinary repair to reach.

Built-in equipment moves the halves a long way up. That is the whole of the arithmetic, and it is why the answer for this kind of kitchen is usually not the answer the rule gives for a countertop appliance. The two tables below are what the sum is done from — the repair bands this bench publishes, and what a comparable appliance costs new.

One thing to hold on to before the figures: the replacement column is the appliance only. Delivery, fitting, the cabinetry that has to be cut or made good, and taking the old unit away all sit on top of it. A repair carries none of that tail, so every comparison on this page is already generous to replacing.

What does the repair cost against a new appliance?

The visit is a flat $80, credited toward the repair when you approve the work. What the repair runs on Viking kitchen appliances is below, parts and labour together, before the written estimate narrows it to one figure.

Bands for Viking kitchen appliances, $80 to $2,580. The estimate in your hand is the number that binds.
Work Parts and labour
Diagnostic visit $80 flat, credited
Igniter or burner assembly $210–$520
Oven thermostat or heating element $190–$610
Control board or touch panel $380–$940
Refrigeration fan or defrost system $250–$610
Dishwasher pump or control $230–$660
Compressor or sealed-system repair $960–$2,580
Against replacing it instead: A comparable Viking range, built-in refrigerator or dishwasher, appliance only — before delivery, installation or cabinetry. National appliance pricing, not Florida labour.
Replace with Appliance only
Professional range, the usual repair-or-replace comparison $6,500–$14,500
Built-in refrigerator or column $9,500–$17,500
Built-in dishwasher $1,600–$3,200

It is a band and not a price because one symptom is usually several repairs, and they do not cost the same. The survey is what picks which one it is. The whole book, and what the fee buys.

Does each repair clear the fifty-per-cent rule?

One row per band, measured the hard way: against half of the cheapest appliance that band could belong to, appliance-only. Where a repair fits in more than one cabinet — the electronic control does — it is tested against the smallest of them, because that is the only test it can fail.

The fifty-per-cent rule applied to every band this bench publishes. 5 of 6 rows clear it outright.

Repair it
Worth repairing. The dearest version of this work is still under half the cheapest comparable replacement.
A judgement call
A judgement call at the top of the band, and an easy yes at the bottom of it. The survey decides which end you are on.

Arithmetic settles the price question and then stops, because the rest of the answer is not about price. A band that clears the rule on paper can still be the wrong repair to make, and what decides that is the age of the cabinet and what has already been done to it.

The sealed system is the one repair large enough for the question to be real. It is the dearest line in the book by a distance, and on a refrigerator that has already had that circuit opened once, a second estimate for the same work is the appliance telling you something. We say that out loud, on the telephone or at the kitchen table, before a part is ordered rather than after it arrives.

The other honest no is an estimate that is the third major part inside a year. Each one on its own is worth doing and the sum of them is not, and the only person who can see the sequence is whoever keeps the invoices. Bring them out while we are there. A board taken out by one of roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year is a single event, and that is a different conversation from a cabinet failing in three places.

Declining a repair costs you the $80 diagnostic and nothing beyond it, and the written estimate is yours to keep — take it to whoever you like, a showroom included. What the fee buys and what a repair is guaranteed for are both set out in full.

Asked when the estimate arrives

What decides where in a band my estimate lands?
Which repair the fault turns out to be, first of all — one symptom is usually several repairs and they do not cost the same. After that: whether the part is one revision or another for your serial, and what it takes to get the appliance out far enough to reach the back of it.
Does the replacement figure include installation?
No. A comparable Viking range, built-in refrigerator or dishwasher, appliance only — before delivery, installation or cabinetry. National appliance pricing, not Florida labour. Delivery, fitting, any cabinetry alteration and the disposal of the old unit all sit on top of it. A repair carries none of that tail, which is why the honest comparison is wider than the two tables above make it look.
Which repair actually changes the answer?
The sealed system. Compressor or sealed-system repair work runs $960–$2,580, several times the control board or touch panel at $380–$940 and the only figure in the book large enough to make replacement a real question. Everything else is decided by the age of the cabinet, not by the price.
Do you ever tell people not to repair?
Yes, and before a part is ordered rather than after. A second sealed-system failure on the same circuit, or an estimate that is the third major part inside a year, is a cabinet telling you something. Declining costs you the $80 diagnostic and you keep the written estimate.
What does the $80 buy before any of this?
The trip out, reproducing the fault rather than taking the symptom at face value, the survey itself, and a written estimate itemised into parts and labour. It is credited toward the repair when you approve the work, and it includes a plain answer on whether the repair is worth doing.

What owners said about the decision

4.5 out of 5, across 70 published owner notes. Read all of them.

  • The detergent cup was not opening, so everything came out gritty. He fitted a new dispenser and then noticed the wax motor lead chafing on the frame, which is very likely what killed the first one.

    Alistair K.

  • The repair has held up fine and the machine drains properly again. What costs the stars is the booking: my slot shifted twice and I found out both times by ringing in rather than being told. Careful bench, ragged diary.

    Harold I.

  • Self clean locked the door and then would not let it go. He talked me through the cooldown on the phone first, and when that did not free it he changed the lock motor and ran a full cycle to prove it released.
