No 24-hour line and no emergency service. If you can smell gas, shut the supply off at the valve and call the gas utility before you call anyone else — that one is theirs, not ours.

    The rating plate

    Model and serial, photographed. On a range it is usually behind the kick plate or on the frame behind the door; on a built-in refrigerator, on the upper interior wall or ceiling of the fresh-food compartment. That plate also records which gas the appliance was set for, which settles a surprising number of cooktop complaints on its own.

    The symptom, in your own words

    Not a diagnosis. "It clicks and clicks and never lights" is more useful than "I think the igniter is bad", because those are two different repairs and the first sentence tells us which.

    What changed just before

    A boil-over, a cleaning cycle, a storm, a power cut, a new gas supply, a kitchen that was empty for a month. The event before the fault narrows the survey more than any other single thing you can tell us.

    Where it is

    The town and the community. Access matters here — a gated address, a dock house, an island cooktop with the blower somewhere in the attic. Knowing that in advance decides which ladder rides out on the van.
